What Are Full-service Schools?
Full-service or community schools meet students’ mental health and physical health needs while also providing quality out-of-school time programs, family engagement and support, and connections to other community institutions and agencies. A full-service school building is filled with children and adults engaged in positive activity, before school, long after the school day is over, on weekends and during the summer. The Full-service Schools Roundtable promotes a broadly-defined full-service school model in which – at its most evolved - schools have integrated, coherent, and strategic partnerships that meet the range of students’ needs. The Roundtable does, however, believe that there is a continuum of the full-service schools model. We therefore embrace any school or community institution that has a set of strategic partnerships in place that intend to address the needs of “the whole child.” While no two full-service schools look exactly alike, all involve coordination by school-based staff and the development of strong, collaborative partnerships that support the school’s mission to advance student achievement. |
